SPRINT to Preview Coming Attraction
Frank Sinatra sang his heart out for them at their first major fund-raiser. And last year Julio Iglesias did the same. We’ve got to agree that founder Nina Leif and the other members of SPRINT/UCLA Foundation (Special Preventive Research, Intervention and New Technology for children at UCLA) get only the best.
On Feb. 13 the SPRINT group is gathering at Bullock’s Wilshire for cocktails with BW President Jerome Nemiro in his penthouse suite, lunch in the store’s East Tea Room and a viewing of Emanuel Ungaro’s spring collection just as it was presented on the runway in Paris. And it’s then that Mrs. Leif will announce the star attraction for SPRINT’s October fund-raising concert at the Universal Amphitheater, another special event. Among those expected are Mrs. Lew Wasserman, Mrs. Paul Ziffren, Muriel Slatkin, Mrs. Frank Price, Mrs. Henry Plitt, Guadalupe Hank, Polo Roth, Maxine Goldenson and Mrs. Milton Hoffman, all of them SPRINT supporters from the very start.
The Northeast Los Angeles County Unit of the American Cancer Society is putting on its first black-tie Victory Ball next Friday at Pasadena’s Huntington Sheraton Hotel, with a 1930s “Rhapsody in Blue” theme for the Art Deco decor. The Ralph M. Parsons Co., the international engineering firm that for the past nine years has sponsored the Tournament for Life golf classic (and raised $300,000 for cancer service, education and research programs), will be honored that night for its contributions to the American Cancer Society. Parsons Chairman and CEO William E. Leonhard will accept the award and the commendations.
Mrs. Kenneth Hanna is chairman for the Victory Ball and serving on the honorary committee are Dr. Robert McKenna, oncologist and national president of the cancer society, and his wife; television anchorman and Mrs. Jess Marlowe; the William Christophers; California Highway Patrol Chief Ray Johnson, and USC President James Zumberge and his wife.
The Social Scramble: The logistics for Tova and Ernie Borgnine’s dinner party for Helge and Nini Naarstad of Florida and Norway were pretty complicated. But then Helge is chairman of the Sea Goddess Cruise Lines, so he understood. Everybody had a rendezvous at the Bistro where they parked their cars. Then limos transported them to the Wilshire Boulevard penthouse headquarters of Tova’s beauty empire, where they watched the sunset and sipped cool drinks. And then it was back to the Bistro for dinner. Complicated but worth it, agreed such guests as Esther Williams, Jacques Camus who was just back from a holiday at the Kahala Hilton, Charles Nelson Reilly, Sheila and Irwin Allen, Dr. Ivy Mooring, Maggie and Jean Louis, Carol DeLuise (Dom was cruising aboard the QE 2) and C. V. and Joanne Dru Wood.
Sharing social tidbits over lunch at the Bistro Garden--the county’s chief of protocol Margaret Carr and entrepreneur Morgan Mason. Margaret had just said goodby to the King and Queen of Tonga and Morgan had just sold two movie ideas that should go into production soon. At other tables--Robert Six, who’s off to Paris soon; Babbs Shoemaker; Kirk Kerkorian with Greg Bautzer; Virginia Ramo; Diane Glazer.
Lunching out on the patio of Ma Maison--Tina Turner (she seems to be everywhere these days), Ben Vereen, Robert Conrad, Joan Axelrod with Paula Weinstein, George Stevens Jr. with Irving Paul Lazar, beautiful blonde Camilla Sparv with equally beautiful brunette Corinna Fields.
Mrs. Frank Sinatra is honorary chairman for the March of Dimes fund-raiser taking place Sunday at the Torie Steele boutiques on Rodeo Drive. The afternoon will include a champagne reception and a fashion show (all for sale) of designs by Gianfranco Ferre and Valentino. A percentage of every sale goes to the March of Dimes to help with medical research, public education and community service.
The big surprise at Kay Brown’s musical evening was Rafael de Marchena’s flamenco dancing--very authentic. Applauding loudly were Webster Phillips, New Yorker Joel Gerson, Zita and Adolph Haber, the Irv Antlers and Maureen Womack with Nat Dumont--again.
Mix-and-matching the entrees at Trader Vic’s--attorney Maurice Harwick and his wife, Sue, with Jane and Robert Kramer and Dr. Alvin and Carolyn Mulne.
