The Malibu Pier has been approved by the county Board of Supervisors for registry as a point of historical interest. Final approval by the state would give the pier limited protection under the California Environmental Quality Act, county officials said.

That approval is expected from the California Historical Resources Commission. Barbara Henderson, chairwoman of the county Historical Landmarks and Records Commission, said the pier was constructed in the early 1900s to unload materials for building the 20-mile Rindge Railroad that ran from Las Flores Canyon to the Ventura County line. The pier was enlarged in 1946 when a restaurant, store and tackle shop were added.

After the pier is named a point of historical interest, any proposals to tear it down for development must be reviewed by state historic preservation experts, county officials said.
