Area Roundup : Enberg to Emcee Hall of Fame Banquet

Dick Enberg, Angel and NBC announcer, will emcee the fifth annual Orange County Sports Hall of Fame Banquet on March 4 in the Anaheim Convention Center.

The banquet will feature the induction of four people into the Hall of Fame--Hobie Alter, world-famous boat builder, Randy Jones, former Cy Young award-winning pitcher, Gerry Mullins, who played on the Pittsburgh Steelers’ four Super Bowl-winning teams, and 1932 Olympic Gold Medalist Evelyn Furtsch Ojeda.

In addition, the Hall of Fame’s Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to tennis instructor Vic Braden.

The San Onofre State Beach surfing championships will be held Saturday or Sunday, depending on surf conditions, starting at 7 a.m.

It is the first event on the Women’s International Surfing Assn. pro-am circuit. Mary Lou Drummy, Tricia Gill and Brandi Balmayne are among the Orange County professional surfers scheduled to compete in the event.

Former Saddleback College track assistant Rich James has been named to replace Tom White as the Gauchos’ head track coach. James coached the throwing events (shot put, javelin, discus and hammer) the past three years. Saddleback has won the South Coast Conference track title two straight years.

The 552 Club’s Crosby Southern Pro-Am Golf Tournament, benefiting Hoag Memorial Hospital, will be held Saturday and Sunday at the Irvine Coast Country Club at Newport Beach.

A $40,000 purse will be awarded to the pro winner. The tournament, which begins Saturday morning at 7:30, will be televised by KDOC-Channel 56 (Anaheim) from 1-2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
