Pacific 10 Roundup : Steve Kerr Scores 23 Points as Arizona Beats Stanford

Sophomore guard Steve Kerr scored a career-high 23 points, 13 in the first half, as Arizona defeated Stanford, 68-56, in a Pacific 10 basketball game Thursday night at Tucson.

The Wildcats, who hit 10 of 14 shots to take an early lead, scored their fourth straight conference victory. Arizona’s Pac-10 record is 7-3 and overall record 16-6 while Stanford fell to 3-7 and 11-9.

Midway through the first half, the Wildcats scored eight consecutive points. Kerr, who was six for six from the field in the first half, scored on a layup with 10:22 left in the first half to end the streak and put the Wildcats ahead, 21-10.

Novian Whitsitt led the Cardinal with 16 points.

Arizona St. 61, California 60--Sophomore guard Bobby Thompson hit a 10-foot jumper with 18 seconds remaining to give the Sun Devils the victory at Tempe, Ariz.

The Golden Bears had a chance to win the game, but a Chris Washington jumper hit the front of the rim as time ran out. Washington scored 14 points for California, all in the second half.

Leonard Taylor scored 17 points to lead California. Jim Deinas had 10 points to lead Arizona State.
