Stroh Brewery will close its original Detroit plant.

Stroh, which became the nation’s third-largest beer manufacturer after a 1982 takeover of Jos. Schlitz Brewing Co., will maintain its corporate headquarters in Detroit. Stroh said that the company has excess capacity and that the Detroit plant is the oldest and least efficient of its facilities. Work at the 135-year-old brewery, which employs 890, will be phased out beginning in the spring. Stroh will continue to brew beer at its six other plants, including its Van Nuys facility.
