Prep Basketball Boys : Montclair Prep Beats L. A. Lutheran, 80-63 : BOYS

Things have been going right for the Montclair Prep basketball team all season. And Tuesday night was no exception.

The Mounties, who beat L.A. Lutheran, 80-63, assured themselves of at least a tie for their first Alpha League title. The victory improved their first-place league record to 12-1 and 20-1 overall.

“It’s been our ‘year’ all season,” said Mounties coach Howard Abrams after the win. “Most of these guys have been playing together for six or seven years. And now their time has come.”

Cernter Todd Bowser led the attack, scoring 27 points, grabbing 12 rebounds while forward Tim Stallworth added 17 points and 15 rebounds.

With Montclair leading, 39-32, at halftime, Stallworth scored six straight points to put Montclair Prep up, 45-32. The Mounties then out-rebounded the Lions, 8-3, the rest of the quarter and extended their lead to 56-44.

Bowser then scored the first five points of the fourth quarter to increase Montclair Prep’s lead to 61-44 with six minutes left. The other Mounties made five of seven the rest of the way to insure the win.

For L.A. Lutheran, which drops to 10-3 in league, 13-8 overall, Dondre Bausley had 27 points.

Camarillo Chr. 68, W. Vly Chr. 43

A balanced scoring attack helped Camarillo Christian High defeat West Valley Christian at Hillcrest Gymnasium.

Paul Smith scored 17 points for Camarillo Christian, and Pat Nash and Alex Porter each had 15.

John Henderson scored 19 points to lead West Valley Christian, which fell to 3-5 in the Ch ristian Schools Athletic Conference and 6-8 overall.

Camarillo Christian improved to 8-0 in conference.

Cathedral 75, St. Genevieve 72

Despite a torrid St. Genevieve High fourth-quarter rally in which the Valiants scored 29 points, Cathedral held on to win at St. Genevieve.

Mo Guardado scored 24 points, 15 in the fourth quarter, to lead the Valiants. He also had 10 rebounds.

George Avila scored 23 points, Victor Hernandes had 17 and Oscar Leong had 16 for Cathedral.

St. Genevieve was led by Nate Obispo’s 18 points. Arnold Durazo and Tony Garcia each added 11 for the Valiants.

Cathedral improved its Santa Fe League record to 5-6. St. Genevieve fell to 3-9 in league and 9-13 overall.

Chaminade 78, Pater Noster 33

Four players scored in double figures for Chaminade as the Eagles routed Pater Noster.

Tony Martinez, a 5-11 senior guard, scored 12 points and 6-2 junior forward Terry Siciliano had 11 points and 12 rebounds. Jeff Gehl and Kevin Black each added 10 points for Chaminade.

Pater Noster, which dropped to 0-9 in the Santa Fe League and 0-19 overall, was led by Alfonso Herrera’s 7 points.

Chaminade is 6-5 in league and 8-12 overall.

St. John Bosco 69, Crespi 63

Crespi High has already clinched the Del Rey League championship, so the Celts could be excused for letting down against St. John Bosco at home.

Crespi, which is 10-2 in league and 15-7 overall, were led by Brian Capp’s game-high 26 points and Joe Campanella’s 12 points.

Steve Balstad scored 22 points, Danny Means had 19 and Mike Ritter added 16 for St. John Bosco. The Braves are 5-6 in league and 11-10 overall.

Cal Prep 45, Oakwood 40

Stubborn Cal Prep’s defense in the third quarter helped the Knights to overcome a 20-15 halftime deficit and defeat Oakwood at home.

Cal Prep outscored the Gorillas, 11-2, in the third period by forcing 13 turnovers.

Jake Devane scored 28 points, his season average, for the Knights.

Ron Hahamy scored 20 points and Josh Feder added 16 for Oakwood. The Gorillas fell to 5-5 in the Liberty League and 8-10 overall.

St. Francis 74, Bosco Tech 66

Matt Dyrek, a 6-7 senior forward, scored 24 points and had 12 rebounds to lead St. Francis High to victory over Bosco Tech.

St. Francis locked up at least third place in the Del Rey League with the win.

Guard Dan Jordan sank 15 of 15 free throws en route to 23 points for the Golden Knights, who are 7-4 in league and 11-11 overall.

Mario Diaz scored a game-high 26 points for Bosco Tech, while teammate Will Vasquez had 23 points and 12 rebounds. The Techmen are 4-7 in league.

St. Francis will play Alemany on Friday in a game that will decide second place in the league.

Canyon 104, Quartz Hill 71

Juniors Butch Mettinger and Darrin Moloznik each scored 27 points as Canyon High set a school scoring record in its win at Quartz Hill.

Chris Botkin had 12 points and 11 assists for Canyon, which improved its record to 6-3 in the Golden League and 15-8 overall.

Quartz Hill, led by Marvin Yarrell’s 16 points, fell to 1-8 in the league.

L.A. Baptist 50, Village Chr. 30

L.A. Baptist High clinched an Alpha League playoff berth with a runaway victory over Village Christian at home.

Matt Kreiger scored 13 points and Eric Dickson added eight for the Knights. L.A. Baptist is 11-2 in league and 18-4 overall.

Village Christian fell to 4-9 in league play and 9-11 overall.

Alemany 57, Notre Dame 51

Alemany High broke to a 35-27 halftime lead and never wavered at home against Notre Dame.

David Djolakian scored 27 points for the Indians, who are tied for second in the Del Rey League with St. Francis. Both teams are 7-4.

Brian Anderson scored 12 points and John Perek had 11 for Notre Dame. The Knights fell to 3-8 in league and 4-14 overall.

Alemany is 18-7 this season.
