Fredieu Gets Cal Lutheran Off to Flying Start

Coming off a successful showing at the Cal State Bakersfield Invitational, the Cal Lutheran College track team will officially open its dual- and tri-meet season Saturday when it plays host to UC San Diego and Chapman College.

“This year is going to be a good one for us,” said Cal Lutheran Coach Don Green. “We have the manpower to beat just about anyone, and I feel we can do it.”

In the Bakersfield meet last Saturday, Vaughn Fredieu qualified for the NAIA national championships in the javelin on his first throw of the meet, a toss of 216-6. Don Price won the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.1 and finished fourth in the long jump behind teammate Troy Kuretich.

The tri-meet Saturday gets underway with the hammer throw at noon. The first race is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Westlake Football Clinic

Four football coaches with a combined record of 55-1 last season will speak at a coaching clinic March 2 at Westlake High School.

Frank Greminger of Agoura High School, the Desert-Mountain Conference champion, will speak on “Developing a Program from the Freshman Level.” Harry Welch of Canyon, whose team won the Northwestern Conference title, will speak on “Canyon Cowboy Football--An Overview.” Both teams were unbeaten in 1984.

Bob Baiz of Claremont, the Eastern Conference champion, will talk about the Wolfpack offense. Mike Churchill of Riverside Poly will discuss the wing-T offense. Riverside Poly went 13-1 while winning the Big Five championship.

Yerina Streak Broken

Pat Yerina of Thousand Oaks had his streak of starting games for Fairfield University’s basketball team broken at 73 when he was replaced in the lineup against St. Peter’s by sophomore Chip Simenz. Yerina came off the bench and had six points and three rebounds in 15 minutes.

The junior from Crespi High, who had started every game since he was a freshman, is averaging more than 10 points and five rebounds a game.

San Fernando Alumni Baseball

The varsity baseball team at San Fernando High School will take on a group of former Tiger stars March 2 in the school’s first alumni baseball game.

Baseball, Softball Registration

The Canoga Park-Northridge League has merged with the West Valley Girls Softball League to form one of the few San Fernando Valley programs for both boys and girls.

The softball league will offer softball for girls aged 8 to 18.

Registration for the spring season will be taken at the Batters Up batting cages at Saticoy Street and Winnetka Avenue.
