Tennis Roundup : After Winning First Pro Title, Mayotte Loses in First Round
Tim Mayotte, who won his first pro title in the Lipton International Players Championships Sunday, couldn’t get past Wojtek Fibak of Poland Wednesday in the first round of the $200,000 Molson Light Challenge tournament at Toronto.
The unseeded Mayotte exited early, falling in straight sets, 7-5, 7-6.
Meanwhile, three seeded players struggled while advancing to the third round as No. 2 Eliot Teltscher defeated Chip Hooper, 7-6, 3-6, 6-2; No. 5 Gene Mayer downed Michiel Schapers of the Netherlands, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, and No. 6 Ramesh Krishnan of India beat Rick Leach, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.
Defending champion Hana Mandlikova of Czechoslovakia powered her way to a hard-fought 6-2, 7-6 first-round victory over Barbara Gerken in the $150,000 Virginia Slims of California tournament at Oakland.
Earlier in the day, second-seeded Wendy Turnbull of Australia breezed to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Lori McNeil in second-round play.
Top-seeded Chris Evert Lloyd plays her first match today, meeting Mareen Louie in the second round.
Unheralded Ken Feuer of Mas sapequa, N.Y., defeated Jeff O’Dwyer of Pittsford, N.Y., 6-3, 6-7, 7-5, to advance to the final of the 18th annual Concord Hotel Junior Men’s Invitational tournament at Kiamesha Lake, N.Y.
Feuer, 16, will meet top-seeded Takeshi Omono of Japan today for the championship. Omono, an 18-year-old high school senior living in Franklin Lakes, N.J., scored a 6-3, 6-1 semifinal victory over Glenn Solomon of Roslyn Heights, N.Y.
