CSUN Women Lengthen Lead at Swim Championships

The Cal State Northridge women extended their lead in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. swimming championships Thursday, while the CSUN men’s team fell further behind Cal State Bakersfield.

The Northridge men are expected to take the lead today during the diving competition, however. Bakersfield, which does not field a diving team, should give up as many as 132 points to the Matadors in the board events.

Bakersfield leads the men’s competition with 358 points. Northridge has 295, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo has 202 and Cal State L.A. has 109.

In the women’s events, CSUN leads with 573 points, while Cal Poly SLO follows with 433 points. Cal State L.A. has 186.

Northridge’s Crista Lawrence, Michelle Barnett and Krissy Walden finished first, second and third in the women’s 200-yard butterfly. Lawrence’s winning time was 2:07.94.

Marion Gelhaus and Harmony Lawrence of CSUN took first and second in the women’s 3-meter diving competition with 464.6 and 417.8 points, respectively.

Lady Matadors Cynthia Snyder and Melanie Stoer captured second and third in the women’s 100-yard breast stroke. Snyder was clocked in 1:13:00 while Stoer finished at 1:13.69.

Northridge also captured the women’s 800-yard freestyle relay with a time of 7:48.2.

In the men’s 100-yard breast stroke, CSUN’s Jeff Kubiak was second with a time of 59.78, while teammate Jeff Fukushima was third with a time of 1:00.55.

Tim Hedrick of Northridge finished third in the men’s 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:57.47.

Northridge was second behind Bakersfield in the men’s 800-yard freestyle relay. The Matadors’ time was 6:55.89.

Two Bakersfield men qualified for the NCAA Division II Nationals. Tim Roth made it with a first-place time of 52.61 in the 100-yard backstroke and Brian Morrison did it with a first-place time of 58.83 in the 100-yard breast stroke.
