In a match of long baseline rallies, top-seeded Chris Evert Lloyd outlasted Mareen Louie, 6-3, 6-2, Thursday night in a second-round match of the $150,000 Virginia Slims of California tournament at Oakland.

Louie, the tournament’s local favorite who has a baseline style similar to Lloyd’s, made her share of strong shots, but she couldn’t match Lloyd’s steadiness.

Lloyd, the six-time U.S. Open champion, broke Louie’s serve in the seventh game of the first set to go ahead, 4-3. Lloyd won the first three games of the second set.

Lloyd advances to the quarterfinals and will play Claudia Kohde-Kilsch of West Germany tonight. Kohde-Kilsch defeated Alycia Moulton, 6-1, 6-2.

Other players advancing to the quarterfinals Thursday were Helena Sukova of Czechoslovakia, who beat Debbie Spence, 6-1, 4-6, 6-1; Barbara Potter, who edged Robin White, 6-3, 6-4, and Hana Mandlikova, the tournament’s defending champion, who beat Kim Shaefer, 6-0, 6-1.

Mandlikova will meet Wendy Turnbull, and Potter will face Zina Garrison.

In a second-round match of the $200,000 Molson Light Challenge tournament at Toronto, Anders Jarryd was fined $500 for swearing and swinging his racket wildly, but the Swede fought off Mike DePalmer, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, to advance to the quarterfinals.

With the final set tied, 4-4, Jarryd erupted when his second break point in the ninth game was thwarted by a service return into the net. Believing DePalmer’s serve should have been called out, Jarryd shouted and gestured to umpire George Rustscheff.

When Jarryd netted another service return, he threw down his racket and again shouted at the official.

In other second-round matches, No. 3 seed Kevin Curren of South Africa stopped Paul Annacone, 7-6, 6-3; Wojtek Fibak of Poland edged Francisco Gonzalez of Paraguay, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4; and qualifier Bud Schultz upset John Sadri, 6-7, 6-2, 6-4.
