The driver of one of the cars involved in a head-on collision that killed two persons and seriously injured three others Sunday on the Golden State Freeway may have driven as far as two miles in the wrong direction, authorities said Monday.

Lanette Forshey, 21, of Palmdale, apparently was intoxicated when she drove northbound in the southbound lanes early Sunday morning, California Highway Patrol officials said. Her car collided with a van carrying six people from El Monte.

Forshey was killed in the crash, along with Tony Jimenez, 4, a passenger in the van, CHP officer Harry Ingold said.

Ingold said the CHP investigation indicated that Forshey had entered the freeway two miles before the point of the crash, that she was driving faster than 70 m.p.h. and that she was swerving among all the southbound lanes.

The driver of the van, Francisco Jimenez, 26, of El Monte, was listed in serious condition with internal injuries. Bridget Pierce, 19, of Granada Hills, a passenger in Forshey’s car, was listed in fair condition with head injuries. Both were hospitalized at Henry Mayo Memorial Hospital in Valencia.
