2 Escape Unhurt From San Juan Fire
Both occupants of a San Juan Capistrano apartment managed to escape unharmed after a fire broke out near a gas fireplace. The blaze did about $30,000 damage before Orange County firefighters doused the flames, authorities said Tuesday.
The fire broke out shortly before 3 p.m. Monday at 32221 Alipaz St. Flames swept up the wall around the fireplace and spread to the attic of the upstairs apartment, but there was no damage to any other homes in the eight-unit building, according to Orange County Fire Capt. Mark Reinhold.
Joan Schell, 54, and her 19-year-old daughter, Jennifer, were uninjured, but their apartment was rendered “uninhabitable,” Reinhold said. He said the fire broke out near the fireplace but stressed that no cause had been determined by Tuesday afternoon.
It took 32 firefighters about an hour to put out the fire.
