College Basketball Roundup : Oregon State Surprised at Home by New Mexico

George Scott scored 21 points and Johnny Brown added 19 to lead New Mexico to a 72-65 nonconference victory over slumping Oregon State Tuesday night at Corvallis, Ore.

The loss was the fourth in the last five home games for the Beavers. The four losses at home are the most for a Ralph Miller-coached team since his first season in Corvallis in 1971.

New Mexico is now 16-11, the Beavers 19-7.

Top scorer for Oregon State was A.C. Green with 20 points. Oregon State has lost six of its last 10 games.

The Beavers, defending co-champions in the Pacific 10 Conference, led, 32-31, at the half and led, 37-31, as Green hit for five straight points at the start of the second half.

But the Lobos went ahead, 45-40, with 12:52 left and led, 60-51, with 4:02 to play.

The Lobos shot a school record 75% from the field, making 28 of 40. The Beaves hit 49% (28 of 57).

Syracuse 80, Pittsburgh 72--Center Rony Seikaly’s five straight field goals in the first half snapped the Orangemen out of a scoring slump and they went on to defeat Panthers in Big East game at Syracuse, N.Y.

Syracuse, with one game left in its regular season, is now 20-6, 9-6, and Coach Jim Boeheim has eight 20-win seasons in nine years at Syracuse.

“I guess you spell relief ‘twenty,’ ” said Boeheim, whose team snapped a two-game losing streak.

Pitt is 16-10, 7-8.

Rafael Addison led the Orangemen with 25 points. Seikaly had 17, including 13 in the first half, Dwayne Washington added 14 points and 12 assists and Michael Brown had 10 points. Pitt was led by 6-10 freshman Charles Smith with 18 points.

Syracuse led, 41-35, at halftime and increased the lead to 51-40 three minutes into the second half.

Tulane 65, Louisville 56--It was first win for Green Wave against Cardinals in 19 meetings as John Williams scored 22 points to lead Metro Conference victory at New Orleans.

Manuel Forrest was the top scorer to the Cardinals (14-14, 5-7) with 14 points. Tulane is now 14-12, 5-8.

Two of Louisville starters, Mark McSwain and center Barry Sumpter, fouled out in the final four minutes of play.

Princeton 49, Penn 47--Junior John Smyth made two free throws with five seconds left as Tigers scored an upset victory in an Ivy League game at Philadelphia. The Tigers are now 9-13, 5-5. Penn is 11-11 and 8-2.

Princeton’s Howard Levy scored 20 points.

Colorado State 65, Air Force 63--Todd Benn scored 17 points, including a free throw with one second left, to lead the Rams in a Western Athletic Conference game at Air Force Academy, Colo. The Rams are now 16-11, 8-7. The Falcons are 7-18, 2-13.
