Two Golfers Have Fines Deducted From Winnings

Two pro golfers who refused to pay fines levied by the Professional Golfers’ Assn. will instead have the fines, totaling $1,500, deducted from their winnings.

According to PGA Commissioner Deane Beman, J.C. Snead and Mac O’Grady represent the first cases where pros “refused to abide by our regulations.”

Snead was fined $1,000 in January for remarks “injurious to the tournament sponsor” at the Match Play Championship in Tucson. Snead said the remarks in question were taken out of context, that he was not quoted correctly.

O’Grady was fined $500 for “conduct unbecoming a professional golfer” for remarks he allegedly made to a courtesy car driver at the a tournament in New Orleans. O’Grady denied making the alleged remarks.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corp. said that the Pittsburgh Penguins will move to Hamilton in Ontario, Canada, next fall and will play in a 17,000-seat arena now under construction. But the report was denied by Paul Martha, Penguin vice president and general counsel, and spokesmen for some of Canada’s major breweries.

An Indiana state legislator says he wants his colleagues to join him in a move to censure Indiana University basketball Coach Bob Knight for throwing a chair in Indiana’s loss to Purdue last Saturday.

Rep. Dean R. Mock said he had prepared the Knight resolution a month ago “and I was just waiting for another incident. I knew I wouldn’t have to wait long. This chair-throwing incident was a dandy.”

Pitchers Don Sutton and Mike Norris were missing from the Oakland A’s first workout of 1985.

Sutton, acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers in December, remains at home in Laguna Hills. He says he wants to be traded to a Southern California team.

Norris has been in a San Diego drug rehabilitation center since Feb. 15 and is expected to remain there until mid-March. Norris, who didn’t pitch in 1984 due to continuing shoulder problems, also faces a felony drug charge and three related misdemeanors in Hayward, Calif.
