The government is considering renting out luxury apartments in the 1,000-room Hampton Court Palace outside London that once was the home of King Henry VIII, according to a proposal reported by British newspapers Friday.

The Times of London and the Daily Telegraph said a dozen “grace and favor” apartments--units granted by the Crown to widows of distinguished military men and diplomats--are empty and could be converted into luxury homes and put on the real estate market. The separate units surround the courtyard of the palace but are not in the main building, which attracts more than half a million tourists as year.
