Golf Roundup : Strange Has a 30 on Back Nine to Catch Couples at 13 Under
Curtis Strange shot a 64 Friday to move into a tie with Fred Couples for the lead after the second round of the $500,000 Honda tournament at Coral Springs, Fla.
Couples, who had a course-record 63 in the opening round, shot a 68 Friday and was sitting on a 13-under-par 131 when Strange went to the first tee on the Eagle Trace Club course.
At that point, Strange was eight shots back.
But after a 34 on the front nine, he got an eagle-3 on the 10th hole, added three birdies and finished the back nine with a 30. That was enough to catch Couples.
Rookie Mike Bright came on with a 65 and was two strokes back of the two leaders at 133.
At Phoenix, Betsy King shot a four-under-par 68 to overtake Patty Sheehan and move into the lead after two rounds of the $150,000 LPGA Samaritan Turquoise tournament. King’s two-round total was seven-under-par 137, while Sheehan was at 138 after faltering to a one-over 73 in the second round. She had a seven-under-par 65 in the opening round.
