Sunday turned out just fine, with mild temperatures and clear skies, but National Weather Service forecasters warned of a new storm that threatened to drop some rain on the city by late this afternoon.

The new storm developed rapidly off the Gulf of Alaska on the tail end of a weekend system that moved through the Southland on Saturday, dumping some rain, hail and snow in scattered areas and whipping up strong winds. In most places, precipitation did not measure more than a trace.

Forecasters predicted a 30% chance of rain during the late afternoon today as the new storm pushes over the northwestern states, with the chance of rain increasing to 60% by nightfall.

Cloudiness will increase this morning over coastal and mountain areas, with the chance of showers continuing through Tuesday afternoon, said weather service specialist Betty Reo. She said the high at the Civic Center should hit 62 and overnight lows throughout the area will range from 46 to 50.

Sunday’s Civic Center high was 63, with a humidity reading of 60%. Overnight temperatures Sunday in the San Fernando, San Gabriel and San Bernardino valleys were expected to drop as low as 27.
