Three government officials of the Turks and Caicos Islands, a British colony in the Bahamas archipelago, were arrested by federal agents Tuesday on narcotics-smuggling charges, officials said.

Norman Saunders, who is chief minister of the tiny islands at the southern tip of the Bahamas, was among four persons arrested and jailed, U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency spokesman Frank Chellino said. The chief minister is the highest-ranking member of the country’s Legislative Council.

Chellino said the others were Stafford Missick, minister of commerce and development; Aulden Smith, one of the 11 legislators; and Andre Fournier, a Canadian who has a home in the Bahamas.
