Supporters of a trolley route along Long Beach Boulevard and their opponents, who favor building it along the Los Angeles River, squared off publicly for the last time Tuesday.

About 75 people attended the two-hour hearing before the City Council. Of 19 speakers who said which route they preferred, 13 supported the Long Beach Boulevard option.

Many speakers were homeowners and real estate agents from the city’s Wrigley district, who worry that a trolley line along the river will disrupt neighborhoods and decrease home values.

Others speakers represented Long Beach Boulevard businesses. Spokesmen for the Long Beach Boulevard Area Assn., and the Downtown Long Beach Associates said a trolley line on Long Beach Boulevard will be slow and unsightly and will duplicate existing bus service.

The City Council will select a route March 19. Their recommendation will go to the Los Angeles County Transportation Commission, which will choose a final route for the 22.5-mile trolley line from Los Angeles to Long Beach on March 27.
