Area Roundup : Fullerton Is Site of Road Races Sunday

The Titan Road Classic is set for Sunday at Cal State Fullerton.

The event is divided into three running races. A 2-kilometer race is scheduled for 8:15 a.m., and a 5- and 10-kilometer race is set for 8:45 a.m.

All races start at the Cal State Fullerton Gymnasium off State College Boulevard. The course is flat and winds through the Fullerton campus. Split times will be given at mile marks and an aid station will be provided. The course is sanctioned by The Athletic Congress (TAC).

Fees are for the 5 and 10K races are $10 with T-shirt, $5 without T-shirt. The 2K (13 and under only) is $8 with T-shirt, $5 without T-shirt. Race day registration is from 7-8 a.m. The race will benefit the Titan track and cross country teams.

Plaques will be awarded to top finishers in each division.

Boxer Jerry Quarry of Anaheim, a former heavyweight contender, will be honored during a boxing program at the Irvine Marriott Hotel on Monday.

Quarry, 39, retired from boxing in 1983 after compiling a 53-8-4 professional record. He had 32 wins by knockout and fought five heavyweight champions: Floyd Patterson, Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, Jimmy Ellis and Ken Norton.

The boxing program is scheduled to feature Cubanito Perez, formerly of Cuba now of Santa Ana, against Rocky Alfonso of Guadalajara, Mexico. Perez is 26-1. His only defeat came at the hands of Hector (Macho) Comacho in 1983. Alfonso is 24-6-1, including wins over Mario (Azabache) Martinez and Kiko Bejines.

Applications are being accepted for the Fountain Valley Recreation Department’s Spring 3-man Basketball League.

Team rosters and fees may be submitted to the Recreation Department until 4 p.m. on March 15. Fees are $60 per team and must be submitted in the form of a money order or a cashier’s check, made payable to the City of Fountain Valley.

Schoolpower, the fund raising arm of the Laguna Beach Education Foundation, has scheduled a 10K run at 8 a.m., April 29 at Laguna Beach.

The race starts on Forest Avenue, winds through Laguna Canyon and finishes one block from Main Beach. The course is mostly flat. The race is sanctioned by The Athletics Congress (TAC).

Steve Scott, Ruth Wysocki and Tom Wysocki are scheduled to participate.

The registration fee is $10 with a T-shirt, $6 without. Proceeds will benefit the Laguna Beach Public Schools.

The Costa Mesa Clowns and Old Goats are looking for players 55 years or older who are interested in playing softball in a 23-team slow-pitch softball league.

Players on the two teams range in age from 55 to 70. Those interested in trying out can do so at the teams’ practices at TeWinkle Park each Saturday from 9-11 a.m.

The Clowns recently won the two-day City of Carson 55-and-over softball tournament.
