Man Gets Life in Restaurant Slayings of 4
A 25-year-old Southwest Los Angeles man, Franklin Freeman Jr., was sentenced Friday to life in prison without parole for his part in the slayings of four people during a 1980 robbery at a Bob’s Big Boy restaurant on Los Angeles’ Westside.
Freeman was convicted 15 months ago of four counts of first-degree murder, seven counts of assault with a deadly weapon, six counts of robbery, two counts of attempted robbery and one count of conspiracy. After one jury deadlocked in trying to determine the penalty, a second panel recommended last December that he spend the rest of his life in prison.
Pasadena Superior Court Judge Sally Disco imposed that sentence Friday after denying a defense motion to postpone her decision.
The other gunman in the Dec. 14, 1980, robbery at 1845 S. La Cienega Blvd., Rene Sanders, 28, has been sentenced to death. Co-conspirator Carletha Stewart, 22, a former waitress at the restaurant who planned the robbery, is serving 25 years to life in prison.
