Chicago Wins on Wilson’s Goal in Overtime, 4-3

Behn Wilson’s long slapshot slipped past goalie Glen Hanlon at 1:36 of overtime, giving the Chicago Black Hawks a 4-3 victory over the New York Rangers in the only National Hockey League game played Monday night.

Wilson, whose third-period penalty had helped the Rangers get a power-play goal, sent a shot from the right point that zipped past Hanlon. It was the only shot of the overtime period.

Denis Savard’s goal with 3:11 remaining in the third period boosted the Black Hawks to a 3-3 tie.

Chicago had surged back from a 2-0 deficit, only to see Mark Pavelich give the Rangers a 3-2 lead with 6:54 remaining. Pavelich put a 20-foot wrist shot past screened goalie Murray Bannerman on a New York power play.

Then Savard, who leads the Hawks with 93 points, collected his 35th goal of the season to produce the tie.

The Hawks outplayed the Rangers in the third period but were often foiled by Hanlon, who made 17 saves in the period.

The Rangers built their 2-0 lead on a first-period, power-play goal by Anders Hedberg and George McPhee’s second-period rebound goal. Hedberg connected with slapshot from the high slot on a setup by Pavelich, while McPhee knocked in a rebound after Bannerman stopped Bob Brooke on a breakaway.

Darryl Sutter made it 2-1 by banging in a rebound with 1:12 left in the session.
