The research library at UC San Diego in La Jolla has acquired the papers of the late Leo Szilard, the emigre scientist who was part of the scientific team that created the first nuclear chain reaction in the 1930s. Szilard participated in the Manhattan Project that built the first nuclear bomb and in postwar years worked to promote arms control. He died in 1964, shortly after taking up residence at the Salk Institute, which adjoins the university.
