Martina Navratilova picked on Chris Evert Lloyd’s serve Sunday and won a $150,000 Virginia Slims tournament, 6-3, 6-4, at Dallas.

Navratilova broke Lloyd’s serve four times, twice in each set, to take the $28,000 first prize.

Lloyd said she missed too many first serves and, “You saw what Martina was doing to my second serve”--which was taking it early, driving it into the corner and charging the net.

Navratilova broke serve in the fourth and eighth games of the first set. Then she broke Lloyd at love for a 3-2 lead in the second set and went ahead, 5-2, when she passed a gambling Lloyd who went to the net.

Lloyd won the next two games, but Navratilova served an overpowering game at 5-4 to put the match away.

“She served so well that I had to take more chances, more than I would against any other player,” Lloyd said. “I hit more winners when I take chances, but I make more errors too. We were pretty evenly matched once the rallies started, but my serve let me down at times. She came up and served big when she needed to, and I couldn’t when I needed to.

“The quality of the match was very high, comparable to any that we’ve played the past two years. It was about the best I’ve played against her except for the time I beat her.”

Lloyd ended Navratilova’s 13-match winning streak against her in January in Key Biscayne, Fla., 6-4, 6-2. Navratilova won by the same score in February in Delray Beach, Fla., and Sunday’s match gave the left-hander a 33-31 advantage in their series.

“I’m glad she thought she played well since I was still able to beat her in straight sets,” Navratilova said. “I’m really happy. I had some lapses when I was ahead a break or two, but when I had to, I served better and volleyed better.”
