San Diego Honors Pilot of Crippled Navy Jet

SAN DIEGO —
The reserve Navy pilot who ejected from his crashing jet 80 feet above a San Diego industrial park was commended Tuesday by the San Diego City Council and the county Board of Supervisors.
Supervisor Susan Golding called Cmdr. David Strong’s decision to stay with his F-8 reconnaissance plane “an act of genuine heroism.”
Strong bailed out of his jet to safety seconds before it crashed into an industrial area. Officials said Strong’s actions before leaving the aircraft averted injuries on the ground.
