Local News in Brief : Burbank Denies Beer Sale at Gas Station

Share

The Burbank City Council, fearful that the sale of alcohol at gas stations encourages drinking by teen-agers, Tuesday night reversed a Planning Board decision that would have allowed the sale of gas and beer at a San Fernando Boulevard service station.

“I think it is just too easy and too convenient” if both items are sold in the same place, Mayor E. Daniel Remy said shortly before the council voted 3-1 to overrule the Planning Board.

Council members said they feared setting a precedent for the sale of alcohol at other city gas stations. Burbank has a longstanding policy of rejecting applications for the sale of alcohol at gas station convenience stores.

“Once we carve out an exception for this one,” said Councilman Robert R. Bowne, “we’ve opened our doors to a menace that I’m not ready or willing to support.”

Only Councilman Larry Stamper voted in favor of a conditional use permit for the World Oil Co. to build a 24-hour Arco gas station and convenience store.
