College Softball : No. 2 Fullerton Women Surprised by Utah, 1-0

Michele Townsend’s single in the first inning knocked in Samantha Palmer for the only run of the game, as sixth-ranked University of Utah upset second-ranked Cal State Fullerton, 1-0, in a nonconference game played at the Titan’s field Wednesday night.

Fullerton came back in a second game to defeat Nebraska, 2-0, to improve to 21-3.

Utes pitcher Teri Richardson threw a four-hitter and struck out six in the first game. Susan LeFebvre took the loss.

The Titans scored twice in the third inning against Nebraska, on RBI singles by Maridee Richards’ and Terri Oberg. Debbie Mygind pitched a two-hitter with eight strikeouts for Fullerton.

In community college softball action:

Cypress 4, Mt. San Antonio 3--The Chargers scored four runs in the third inning, one of them on Suzie Sharum’s RBI triple, to defeat the Mounties in a South Coast Conference game played at Cypress College. The Chargers improve to 1-1 in conference and 12-6 overall.

Fullerton 3, Golden West 0--Lisa Fresquez pitched a five-hitter with nine strikeouts, and Carla Williams had a double, triple and an RBI to lead the Hornets to a 3-0 victory over the Rustlers in South Coast Conference action at Golden West. Fullerton improves to 3-0 in conference, 14-2 overall.
