A San Diego man was shot and wounded by police Friday night after he and some companions led police on a high-speed car chase in Southeast San Diego, a police spokesman said.

Nolan Edward Reese, 22, of 1026 Elwood Ave., was listed in stable condition Saturday at Sharp Memorial Hospital with a gunshot wound to the right thigh.

The shooting occurred shortly after 9 Friday when police officers served a warrant at a home in the 6300 block of Scimitar Drive in the Encanto area, according to a statement issued by police.

Reese and two companions drove up to the address in a subcompact car but sped away with their car lights off after police tried to stop them for questioning, the statement said. The men fired several shots at the policemen, who gave chase, according to the statement.

As the car reached Iona Drive and Market Street, a passenger jumped from the right side, dropped a .22-caliber handgun and ran between some houses.

Reese then allegedly got out of the car with a shotgun in his hands and began running toward the police car, where officer Jerry Mills, 26, was sitting.

Mills’ partner, Ronald Featherly, 24, got out of the police car, warned Reese to stop and then fired five times at the running man, hitting Reese once, the statement said.

A third man in the subcompact car drove away and escaped. Police dogs later found the passenger, who had jumped from the car and hid in a nearby backyard. Police identified him as Gerard Grinston, 24, of Spring Valley.

Police say they believe that Grinston and Reese were involved earlier Friday in an armed robbery in which a man in the 1100 block of Klauber Avenue was shot and wounded in the leg.

Both men were booked on suspicion of armed robbery, first-degree burglary, armed assault on a person and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon on an officer.

Bail for Reese, who remained in Sharp Memorial Hospital late Saturday, was set at $26,000; bail for Grinston, who was booked into the county jail, was set at $22,000.
