Passing motorists who came to the aid of a CHP officer who was being attacked by a stolen car suspect were honored with certificates for their heroism from the California Highway Patrol. Tracy Torgerson, Donald Pendry, Tim Donovan, David Allan and Janice Wolfe were given the awards at a recent ceremony in Santa Ana. On Jan. 29, Officer Henry Doeding, an 18-year CHP veteran, had pulled a motorist over on the Santa Ana Freeway in Orange for running a red light on an on-ramp. When he learned from the radio dispatcher that the car had been reported stolen, Doeding called for police assistance. But before other officers arrived, the motorist got out of his car, grabbed Doeding’s night stick and began beating him on the head. Seeing the officer in trouble, the motorists pulled over and came to Doeding’s aid by getting the baton away from the suspect, calling in for help and administering first aid.
