Galapagos Turtle Airlift Planned

QUITO, Ecuador —
About 2,000 giant Galapagos turtles weighing more than 600 pounds each will be airlifted to safety this week from their fire-threatened Pacific island home, scientists said today.
Members of the Charles Darwin Foundation, set up by the United Nations to help conserve the islands’ rich wildlife heritage, said the turtles will be transferred by helicopter to a volcanic crater.
