Share

A wave toppled a 21-foot boat in the Pacific off Oxnard, fatally injuring a 13-year-old boy from Australia. Eleven other people were hurt. Daniel Cosh of Newcastle was trapped under the boat with his mother and an unidentified adult for nearly an hour before they were discovered after it was towed ashore, authorities said. He died while undergoing treatment at St. John’s Hospital in Oxnard. Three other people were hospitalized in serious condition. Nine passengers were able to swim ashore after the pleasure craft, returning from an outing to the Anacapa Islands, capsized 200 feet offshore. “They were paralleling the shore when their engine died. Evidently a freak wave capsized the boat,” Coast Guard Petty Officer Brian Clarke said.
