Bob Horner made his first plate appearance of the spring and Chris Chambliss had two hits and two runs batted in as the Atlanta Braves beat the Baltimore Orioles, 6-2, Tuesday at West Palm Beach, Fla.

Horner, the slugging third baseman who underwent surgery in December to repair his twice-broken right wrist, stepped in against an opposing pitcher for the first time in 10 months as he pinch-hit in the sixth inning. He grounded out to third base on the second pitch from Baltimore’s Nate Snell.

Infielder Andre Robertson of the New York Yankees will undergo arthroscopic surgery today to repair a cartilage tear of the left knee. He will be out about three weeks.

Robertson injured the knee last Saturday during pregame workouts when he caught his spike in the turf while throwing.

Mike Squires, who won a Gold Glove in 1981 at first base for the Chicago White Sox, was placed on waivers by the White Sox. He hit .183 in 104 games last year, used mostly as a defensive replacement.

The White Sox also ended the comeback of 35-year-old Bart Johnson, sending him back to his role as advance scout.

Tony Phillips, Oakland A’s starting second baseman, will be unavailable for at least two months with a broken left foot.

Phillips was hurt Monday against the San Diego Padres at Yuma. It was just his second game of the exhibition season. He re-broke a bone that was broken during a February workout at Oakland.

Dwight Gooden allowed three hits and struck out nine in five scoreless innings as the New York Mets edged the Boston Red Sox, 1-0, at St. Petersburg, Fla.

The Mets scored on singles by Danny Heep, Clint Hurdle and Rafael Santana in the second.

Harold Baines, Greg Walker and Carlton Fisk hit home runs and Tom Seaver won his third spring-training game as the Chicago White Sox defeated the Detroit Tigers, 8-3, at Sarasota, Fla.

Detroit’s Milt Wilcox made his first appearance of the spring after undergoing off-season shoulder surgery. Wilcox, 17-8 last season, pitched three innings and allowed four hits and two earned runs.

Bill Schroeder’s two-run homer off George Frazier in the ninth inning lifted the Milwaukee Brewers to an 8-7 victory over the Chicago Cubs at Sun City, Ariz.

Brewer rookie Doug Loman hit his sixth homer of the spring.

Cleveland Indians’ designated hitter Andre Thornton underwent arthroscopic knee surgery at Cleveland and is expected to be playing again in four to six weeks.
