A visiting American banker was stabbed near Piccadilly Circus and stumbled along a busy street before collapsing from his fatal wounds, Scotland Yard said today.

The U.S. Embassy identified the victim as John Francis Sterling, 39. Police said he was from Denver, and the London office of his employer, Citibank, said he worked in Saudi Arabia and was in London on business.

The victim had had dinner Thursday at Brown’s Hotel in Mayfair, a district with luxury shops, restaurants and hotels near Piccadilly Circus.

“We believe he was stabbed about 10 or 10:15,” police spokeswoman Frances Walker said. “He was seen stumbling in the road, and was found in a state of collapse by a patroling policeman. Cars were actually driving around him as he was stumbling in the road, holding his stomach.”
