Joey Olivo Wins World Light-Flyweight Title

Joey Olivo of Los Angeles Friday night became the first United States fighter ever to win the world light-flyweight championship, dethroning Francisco Quiroz of the Dominican Republic in 15 rounds.

Olivo won a unanimous decision with judge Rogerio Perez scoring it 145-142, judge Roberto Ramirez 143-142 and referee Carlos Berrical 145-143.

The veteran Olivo, whose record is 35-4, with 11 knockouts, scored the only knockdown of the fight when he floored Quiroz in the fifth round for an eight count.

Both fighters weighed in at 107 1/2 pounds at the Miami Beach Convention Center. Quiroz has a record of 11-9-1, with five knockouts.
