Fatih Gets Chance at an Upset Again Sunday in San Luis Rey at Santa Anita

Fatih, a horse claimed for $80,000 late last year by trainer Hector Palma, will try to work some stakes magic again Sunday when he runs in the $200,000 San Luis Rey at Santa Anita.

Six horses were entered Friday for the San Luis Rey, which is run at 1 1/2 miles on turf.

In post-position order, the field consists of Prince True, to be ridden by Chris McCarron; Fatih, Bill Shoemaker; Dahar, Fernando Toro; Gate Dancer, Laffit Pincay; Rake, Darrell McHargue, and Western, Gary Stevens. Dahar and Prince True, who are likely to be the favorites, are both trained by Charlie Whittingham, but they will not run as an entry because they have separate owners

Dahar had already won two stakes at the meeting but was upset by Fatih in the Arcadia Handicap at 1 miles March 10.

The San Luis Rey will mark the turf debut of Gate Dancer, one of last year’s leading 3-year-olds but a colt who has finished third on dirt three straight times this year. Gate Dancer has continued to have a lugging-in problem that resulted in his being disqualified in two of last year’s major races, the Kentucky Derby and the Breeders’ Cup Classic.
