The number of traffic deaths and injuries in California rose in nearly all categories last year, bringing the annual total to 4,999, or 9.4% more than 1983, the California Highway Patrol said. The only declines were in the number of bicycle deaths, down 17.5% to 94, and moped injuries, down 8.8% to 1,231. The 309,352 injuries reported last year were the most since 1978, when 312,620 people were injured in traffic accidents. The CHP figures for 1984 found that alcohol-related deaths rose by 9.3%, to 2,607.
