Pre-1975 Volkswagen bugs were the most popular target of car thieves last year, the California Highway Patrol reported. The CHP said 7,453 of the 109,110 cars stolen in 1984 were vintage VWs. The next two most popular targets of thieves were Ford Mustangs from 1966-75 and Toyota Celicas, from 1976 to the present. A total of 163,661 vehicles were stolen last year, worth about $564 million. Of these, 140,745 were recovered. The theft and recovery rates were almost identical to 1983.
