City Council OKs Zoning Law
The Los Angeles City Council voted 13 to 2 today to pass an ordinance requiring builders to comply with the city’s General Plan, which would reduce the scale of allowable construction in many parts of the city.
By passing the ordinance on an urgency basis--an action that required a minimum of 12 yes votes--the council indicated that the measure should go into effect this week. Mayor Tom Bradley, who has voiced his support for the ordinance, must sign it before it can become law. The vote comes in response to a Superior Court order requiring that the city’s 1946 zoning code be brought into conformity with the newer, generally stricter General Plan, as required by a recent state law.
