El Monte : Industrial Site Chosen for School

The Mountain View School District has selected another site for construction of a junior high school, dropping plans to build the $6-million project on the old Twin Lakes Golf Course property.

District trustees selected a 19.5-acre parcel in an industrial area on Clora Place south of the San Bernardino Freeway because it provides an extra 4.5 acres for construction of warehouse, parking and maintenance facilities, Supt. Alfred S. Madrid said.

Trustees originally had selected a 15-acre portion of the 35-acre golf course site on the north side of the San Bernardino Freeway because the El Monte City Council had offered to pay $687,000 in site preparation costs, Madrid said. Recently, however, the council extended this offer to the larger industrial site.

Alfred S. Madrid Junior High School, named after the superintendent, will accommodate about 850 students and is part of the district’s effort to meet a yearly enrollment growth rate of 5% in all grades. A new elementary school under construction on another portion of the golf course property is 70% complete and will house about 750 students by September.
