DEL-LORDS AT THE LINGERIE: The New York-based Del-Lords are the rock equivalent of the proverbial honest meal: simple, familiar ingredients served up with no fancy tricks. The quartet relies on the proven nutritional value of rock’s blues and country sources, and they juice things up with an earnest social conscience. But they lack the charisma and consistently top-notch material to make them true standouts in the growing brigade of American roots-rockers.

But an honest meal isn’t to be sneezed at. The band’s L.A. debut Thursday packed enough intensity to stir the body and soul, enough political content (specifically, anti-Reaganomics) to rouse the activist spirit, and enough variety to keep the whole thing moving nicely.

With guitars alternately ringing, thrashing and power-chording, the beats brisk and the four voices in various lead and harmony combinations, the Del-Lords evoked everything from Buddy Holly to Creedence, the Everly Brothers to the Stooges. The lack of that special quality keeps the Del-Lords earthbound, but on their own ground they deliver as promised.
