Contest Will Try to Find Best Bulldog in the West

Share

Bulldog owners who think their prized canine is the “perfect bulldog” have until Wednesday to enter a contest that will feature members of the breed from as far away as Utah and Colorado.

Bulldogs from all over the West will compete, said Callan Riggs, show secretary for the April 27 contest in Huntington Beach.

Last year, about 175 bulldogs tried to meet the standard of breed, written in 1896, of “what a perfect bulldog is supposed to look like,” Riggs said. Those qualities include a small yet solidly built dog, with a short, laid-back face “and a kind and gentle disposition,” he said. Nancy Harrison of La Puente will decide which dogs receive the winning trophies and ribbons, Riggs said.

The all-day contest will begin at 8 a.m. at the Best Western Huntington Beach Inn, at 2112 Pacific Coast Highway. Entries must be filed by 6 p.m. Wednesday at 1227 N. Gower St., No. 224, Los Angeles 90038. For further information, owners can call (213) 466-8922 or (714) 685-8523.
