Spring Training / Highlights : Phillies Deal DeJesus to Cardinals

The Philadelphia Phillies traded shortstop Ivan DeJesus and right-handed relief pitcher Bill Campbell to the St. Louis Cardinals for left-handed relief pitcher Dave Rucker, it was announced Saturday.

DeJesus, 32, batted .257 last season but made 29 errors and lost the starting shortstop job to rookie Steve Jeltz this spring. He joined the Phillies after the 1981 season in a trade with the Chicago Cubs.

Campbell, 36, was 6-5 with a 3.43 earned-run average in 57 games last season. Campbell, a 12-year veteran, came to the Phillies last spring from the Cubs.

Rucker, 27, was 2-3 with a 2.10 ERA in 50 games with the Cardinals last season and did not give up a home run in 73 innings. He has been assigned to the Phillies’ Triple-A team in Portland.

The Phillies also announced that reserve infielder Kiko Garcia, released by the Phillies last week, has been re-signed and placed on the opening-day roster.

Notes Sid Fernandez, traded by the Dodgers to the Mets before the 1984 season, was sent down to Tidewater of the International League. He allowed 27 hits and walked 10 in five appearances this spring. His ERA in 27 innings was 8.38. Last season, he was 6-6 with a 3.50 ERA. . . . Also sent down by the Mets were pitchers Calvin Schiraldi and Wes Gardner. Brought up were pitcher Bill Latham and outfielder Terry Blocker. . . . The Mets also said right-hander Brent Gaff, bothered by an inflamed right shoulder, will be placed on the 21-day disabled list. . . . The Yankees optioned pitchers Mike Armstrong and Alfonso Pulido to Columbus of the International League and placed right-hander Marty Bystrom, who underwent elbow surgery last November, on the 60-day disabled list. Armstrong, who takes a one-year, $325,000 contract to Columbus, was 0-2 with an 8.18 ERA this spring. . . . The Yankees also moved infielder Juan Bonilla and outfielder Henry Cotto onto their roster. They had begun spring training as non-roster players. The moves also meant that 35-year-old right-hander Dale Murray made the team.

The Pittsburgh Pirates placed former Arcadia High and USC outfielder Steve Kemp on the 15-day disabled list. . . . Kemp, 30, underwent arthroscopic surgery to repair a tear of the rotator cuff in his left shoulder. He will return to his home in Laguna Niguel to continue rehabilitation. Kemp, who played for the Yankees last season, hit .291 in 94 games, with seven home runs and 41 RBIs. . . . The White Sox released pitcher Ron Reed, a 19-year veteran. Reed, 42, led the White Sox with 12 saves last season. This spring, the right-hander appeared in 12 games, pitched 19 innings and had an 0-1 record and a 6.63 ERA. . . . The Tigers announced their final two roster cuts, first baseman Mike Laga and shortstop Doug Baker. Both were optioned to Nashville of the American Assn. The moves allowed Detroit to keep rookie switch-hitting outfielder Nelson Simmons, who led the club with seven home runs and 23 RBIs in 92 at-bats this spring.

Houston announced that Nolan Ryan will start against the Dodgers in Tuesday night’s opener. He will face Fernando Valenzuela. Wednesday night, it will be Joe Niekro vs. Jerry Reuss. . . . The Astros also announced that Ryan has signed a new two-year contract with one option year. Also signing new contracts were pitcher Bob Knepper and outfielder Terry Puhl. . . . Tom Seaver will start for the White Sox at Milwaukee Tuesday, his 15th opening-day assignment, a major league record. He previously shared the mark of 14 with Walter Johnson.
