Horse Racing Roundup : Gotham Is Won by an 18-1 Shot

Eternal Prince, an 18-1 long shot, led all the way Saturday and won the $201,400 Gotham Stakes by five lengths over even-money favorite Pancho Villa at New York’s Aqueduct race track.

The son of 1969 Kentucky Derby winner Majestic Prince was ridden by Richard Migliore and carried 114 pounds over a mile in 1:34 2/5.

Eternal Prince won a winner’s purse of $120,000 for his third victory in four starts this year. He paid $38.80, $9.80 and $5.60.

Pancho Villa, a son of Secretariat and winner of the seven-furlong Bay Shore in which Eternal Prince was sixth, finished a half-length ahead of El Basco, the runner-up in the Bay Shore.

Pancho Villa returned $3.20 and $2.60, while El Basco paid $3.20.

Spend A Buck, ridden by Angel Cordero, won by 10 1/2 lengths in the $200,000 Cherry Hill Mile for 3-year-olds at Garden State Park in Cherry Hill, N.J.

It was the second race this year for Spend A Buck since recovering from leg surgery. He opened a lead of 2 1/2 lengths on the back stretch and was ahead by 4 lengths going to the top of the stretch and drew away to win in 1:35.2.

I Am The Game finished second in a photo finish over King Babar.

Spend A Buck was the co-favorite at 8-5 with Image of Greatness, ridden by Bill Shoemaker and owned by George Steinbrenner. Image of Greatness challenged only briefly rounding the first turn.

Spend A Buck paid $5.40, $3.20 and $2.60. I Am The Game returned $7.40 and $5.20 and King Babar paid $4.

Proudest Hour finished a nose in front of Felter On The Quay, then survived a foul claim to win the $54,050 Lafayette Stakes at Keeneland’s in Lexington, Ky.

Don’t Hesitate, the 3-5 favorite, was 3 1/2 lengths back in third. Previously unbeaten Kentucky Derby nominee Bold and Vibrant finished fifth.

Proudest Hour, ridden by Randy Romero, paid $10.80, $4.80 and $2.60. Felter On The Quay, ridden by Keith Allen, returned $4.20 and $2.40, and Don’t Hesitate paid $2.40.
