College Baseball : San Diego State Scores Early to Beat UCI, 13-7

San Diego State beat UC Irvine, 13-7, in a nonconference baseball game Tuesday at Irvine.

The Aztecs scored four runs in the first inning and were never headed as Chris Gwynn, younger brother of the San Diego Padres’ Tony Gwynn, went 3 for 5 with two doubles and one RBI. Mark Grace went 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs to help the Aztecs to the six-run victory.

San Diego State improved its record to 33-17. UCI is 17-17-1.

UCI travels to USIU in San Diego for a nonconference game Wednesday.

In NAIA District 3 action:

Pt. Loma 10, Southern California College 3--Dan Slaught went 3 for 5 with five RBIs to lead the win at Pt. Loma. Slaught hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning, and Marty Honea (4-4) went on to pick up the victory.

SCC’s record fell to 6-2-1 in conference and 23-13 overall. Pt. Loma improved its record to 7-2 and 18-17.
