Guidance Clinics Mark Their 60th Year of Service

The Pasadena Guidance Clinics have always been down to earth. They were founded in 1926 in the basement of the Pasadena Board of Education by a few parents concerned about the behavior of their children.

However, their support group, the Big Apple Committee, is allowing itself “A Magical Mystical Evening of Illusion” on May 3 at the Cocoanut Grove.

Mrs. Button Roley, president, and Mmes. Toby F. Wilcox, Robin T. von Tscharner and John Reith are talking about magicians--Mr. Electric and Carol, Max Maven and Norm Nielsen. They’ll be dancing to the music of the Home Savings of America Orchestra.

The night is a kickoff extravaganza marking the clinics’ 60th anniversary of providing mental health services to 33 cities in the San Gabriel Valley and treatment for more than 1,700 families.

Tickets are $125 to assure a tidy profit. Patrons include the William M. Leslies Jr., Genie Riordan, Marilyn and Jud O. Roberts, the W. Jeff Arnetts, the James M. Galbraiths, the William Zimmermans, the Donald Albrechts, the Thomas O. McCutchans and the William E. Steinwedells.

Philanthropist Anna Bing Arnold and “The Leadership Role of Women” steal the spotlight April 25 when the YWCA of Los Angeles hosts its Leader Luncheon XI, “A Celebration of Excellence” in the California Ballroom of the Westin Bonaventure.

Linda Wachner heads the steering committee, working with YWCA of Los Angeles president Virginia Tanzmann.

Silver Achievement Award Winners for 1985 include 10 women leaders. They are Eve Rich, chairman, Contempo Casuals; Barbara Walden, president, Barbara Walden Cosmetics; Jean Sharley Taylor, associate editor, Los Angeles Times; Claire Falkenstein, sculptor; Frieda Caplan, president, Frieda’s Finest Produce Specialities Inc.; Barbara Seaver Gardner Ph.D., USC; Grace Montanez Davis, Los Angeles deputy mayor; Elizabeth Neufeld Ph.D., UCLA; Debbie Kim Green, U.S. Olympic team volleyball player, and actress Jane Withers, who is being lauded for her volunteer community service.

Tickets are $75, assuring a $55 tax deduction, or, to put it another way, $55 clear for the YWCA.

Trustees of the Natural History Museum let no dinosaurs grow under their feet. They plan a gala preview of the New Deutsch Gallery and “GEMesis: The Origin of Gemstones” on May 2.

The rare jewelry collection of Harry Winston will certainly be sparkly enticement, as well as the gowns by couturier James Galanos.

Parties Plus will do the buffet supper. Quartessence will provide the music. A rare night.

Robert R. Wark, the Huntington Art Gallery’s esteemed curator, has been chosen for honors when the Ten British Pictures Committee helps the Huntington Art Gallery Docents celebrate its Silver Anniversary on April 28 on the South Terrace. Of course, that’s the terrace setting where the Thornton Bradshaws were feted before they left for New York, and, at 6 o’clock, the view overlooking the San Gabriel Valley should be spectacular.

To assure fun and celebration, ladies are requested to wear white or silver only. Champagne will bubble and a cake ceremony will precede the grand finale.

Rockwell and Marna Schnabel hosted a dinner Monday evening at the Regency Club honoring Lew Lehrman, who ran for governor in New York, was then asked by President Reagan to head Citizens for America, a nonpartisan national civic league dedicated to educating the public about policies of economic growth and national defense.

Among the invited were Charles Knapp, Bill and Teran Davis, Boyd and Sharon Jefferies, Glen and Gloria Holden, Dick Riordan, Jim Easton and Joe and Ann Baird.

Lehrman, in town primarily to discuss the issue of Nicaragua, spoke Tuesday night to the Los Angeles World Affairs Council.

A host of former all-star football players--Pat Haden, Mark Harmon, Manfred Moore, C. R. Roberts and Wendell Tyler--will join Jerry Buss at Pickfair Saturday evening for the Celebrity Sports Auction/Kickoff Party for the ninth annual Bruin and Trojan Superstar Softball Classic.

That evening the Ricky Bell Humanitarian Award will be established.
