The ABC Unified School District has received an $85,000 grant from the state Department of Health Services to help fund its new employee health and fitness program.
The yearlong pilot program, which began in January, is aimed at guiding district employees to better health and reducing job-related illnesses and injuries.
Coordinated by physical education teacher Kay Martin, the program has 150 volunteer participants. They receive individual exercise and nutrition plans. Other services, including health seminars, a health newsletter and a stop-smoking clinic, are provided to all district employees.
Deputy Supt. Charles Vernon said it is hoped that the program will save the district money. In the 1981-82 and 1982-83 school years, job-related illnesses and injuries cost the district about $450,000 a year, according to a district report.
