“To Gillian on Her 37th Birthday” at the Pan Andreas is a top-notch play with a superb cast and a set that most waiver theaters would kill for. The farthest one can possibly sit from the stage is six or seven rows up, and the tickets are under $15.
Yet on a Friday night, when people were standing in line at the Shubert on the slim chance they’d get a back-row balcony seat cancellation for $35 to see “Cats,” there were empty seats at the Pan Andreas. The reason? Los Angeles is not small-theater oriented.
How about some free 30-second TV and radio testimonials by people like Jack Lemmon, Shirley MacLaine, Michael Jackson, Gregory Peck and Barbra Streisand on the joys of seeing small theater?
