Hearing Slated on Whittier’s New Bus Lines

WHITTIER — A public hearing on proposed routes for the city’s first fixed-route bus system will be conducted at 4 p.m. Monday in the City Council chambers at City Hall.
Residents are encouraged to comment on the two proposed routes, designed to link the city’s residential neighborhoods with Whittier’s two major shopping areas--the Whittwood Mall and Uptown Village--as well as hospitals, City Hall and parks. The city minibus lines will tie into the Southern California Rapid Transit District bus system.
One of the proposed routes runs largely south of Whittier Boulevard, while the other loops north of Whittier Boulevard into the Uptown Village-Whittier College area.
Final routes, bus fares and other specifics of the new system will be adopted by the City Council later this month. The minibus system should be operating by June, said Linda Creed, the city’s new transportation manager.
The new bus system will be an addition to Dial-A-Ride, an Orange County-based service that has a contract with the city to provide transportation for disabled people and senior citizens.
