A badly beaten transient was in critical condition late Thursday at Mercy Hospital after San Diego police found him Wednesday night lying near the 2200 block of 8th Avenue in Balboa Park, a police official said.
Police spokesman Bill Robinson said Chester Gleason, 37, was found near Marston Point on the southwestern edge of the park about 9:30 p.m. He had been beaten badly on the head and underwent surgery for a fractured skull Wednesday night.
Homicide Lt. Paul Ybarrondo said there were no witnesses to the beating and police have no motive or suspects.
