A 29-year-old La Mesa man was in critical condition at Sharp Memorial Hospital Friday night after he was hit by a car on eastbound Interstate 8 while attempting to change a flat tire, a California Highway Patrol spokeswoman said.
Michael Phillips had pulled over near the Fairmont Avenue exit and was standing at the rear of his car when another car hit him, pinning Phillips between the two cars, the spokeswoman said. The force nearly severed one of Phillips’ legs, a spokeswoman at the hospital said.
The driver of the other car, Robert Price, 20, of La Mesa, suffered minor injuries and was taken to Alvarado Hospital.
